Scientific name: Indigofera tinctoria
50 grams of indigo dye 1.1 kilograms of fiber a medium shade.
Plant dye extracts contain more pure and intense colors, unlike dry plant materials that are called ‘dyestuff’. While dyestuff should be used as much as the dry weight of the fiber to be dyed in order to obtain a medium-dark color, this ratio is 3% in extracts.
Indigo is a vat dye, it doesn't require mordanting. However, it needs to be reduced before dyeing so that it becomes permanent on the fabric. If it's your first time dyeing with indigo, we recommend our indigo dyeing kit which includes all substances and instructions for the reduction.
